In Season 5, we sit down with stakeholders working across numerous sectors and industries, to find a common language to address, measure, and demonstrate the impact that they are making in tackling the 17 Global Goals.

From Berlin to Sydney, from Seoul to Hong Kong, our #impact hosts will bring you stories from all over the globe as you find inspiration on how to make an #impact in your community too.

Mental health is often overlooked and neglected. And, while the conversation around mental health has developed over the years, it is still a taboo in many countries and is often viewed as a secondary issue. However, the onset of COVID-19 has forced us to reckon with the consequences of ignoring the subject as we grapple with the impact that the pandemic has had on those silently struggling with their mental health.

In this episode, Dr. Hannah Sugarman of Mind HK, Sean Mayberry of StrongMinds and Janis Whitlock of The JED Foundation discuss how COVID-19 has reshaped how societies view mental health across geographies and how the inclusion of mental health and wellbeing in the Sustainable Development Goals is finally allowing mental diseases to receive the attention that they deserve.

Mind Hong Kong is a local charity committed to improving awareness and understanding of mental health in Hong Kong. They provide online resources and support, based on global best practice, to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems. Further, through public campaigns, resources, and  events, Mind HK seeks to break the stigma associated with the subject. The Mind HK website reaches over 54,000 new users per month and is making a tangible difference in the way Hong Kong society approaches mental health.

StrongMinds is a social enterprise founded in 2013 that provides life-changing mental health services to impoverished African women. Since many African women cannot even begin to tackle issues like poverty and economic development until they overcome depression, StrongMinds provides treatment for women who suffer from this pervasive and debilitating mental illness. By providing group talk therapy delivered by community health workers, StrongMinds is the only organization scaling a cost-effective solution to the depression epidemic in Africa.

We need people to act if we want to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages

An organisation that empowers people to act is our Season 5 sponsor LocalMotion. LocalMotion’s purpose is to help charities and social enterprises make more impact. They do that by taking skilled professional projects off these organisation’s plates. Like when they worked with Cathy and Hatsya, two volunteers that – thanks to LocalMotion – supported Mind HK with their “HELP ME” initiative, a virtual assistant which uses AI to make access to support and information on mental health easier. Cathy and Hatsya collectively donated more than 5000 HKD worth of skills and it really made an impact.

If you are a busy, change-making social enterprise or charity, that needs support with a project, reach out to LocalMotion today at getinvolved@localmotion.hk If you want to become part of a bigger story of social change by donating your professional skills, just like Cathy and Hatsya did – please visit https://www.localmotion.hk.
