For an extended audio version of this post, including the mistakes I made when I first started my Podcast production, you can listen here.

How to create an enticing Podcast concept?

What topics should you address on your Podcast that will help you build and grow an audience?

I love to help my students in my Podcasting Mentorship Programme out with these questions. This time, I will walk you through a bunch of questions to give you a quick start on how to brainstorm and validate topics for your show .

This will help you build a strong concept for your Podcast and curate topics that resonate with you as well as your audience.

This blog-series is brought to you by Start your Podcast. Make an Impact – my Podcasting online course & mentorship programme that shows you how to get your Podcast off the ground and make an impact with your show from day 1. You can take a peek inside the programme here.

Let’s make your Podcast SHINE!

How can you get your topic ideas for your Podcast sorted, how can you make sure they are the “right” topics for you and your target group and curate them in a way to make your Podcast concept shine?

There are a few questions to ask yourself when choosing and curating topics for your Podcast – so let me walk you through some of the very basic ones.

All you have to do at this point is to think about if you would answer yes or no to these questions:

1 | Are you passionate about the topic and excited to learn more about it?

You don’t necessarily have to be an expert on the topics you want to cover on your new Podcast but you have to be excited about the topics and willing to grow your knowledge in that particular area if you want your Podcast to be a success – as your listeners will hear and feel your excitement!

2 | Are there already other Podcasts out there that are addressing the topics that you want to discuss on your show?

If the answer is yes, don’t let that intimidate you, its a great sign that there is interest for this content out there already and you can get inspired by what other Podcasters are doing in this space.

3 | Can you find other content online that is discussing topics you want to address on my Podcast?

Are there any blogs or books written on the topics? Is there media coverage on the topics you want to address on your Podcast?

If you have answered YES to any, many or all of these questions then you are on the right track with your topics.

HOORAY!! People are talking about the topics you want to address on your Podcast.

The next step is to narrow down these topics for targeting the audience you want to cater to.

And this you do by looking at the perfect listener of your show. So here are some basic questions you should ask yourself to build a strong concept for your show:

Who is the particular person/listener you will help/support/educate/entertain with your content?

What is a specific need this listener has?

Make sure that you collect all the information you find and then take a good look at what you have found out and analyse it: how can you now build on these topics for your individual episodes?

Do you see some common themes?

A red thread?

A bigger story that can be addressed as an overall theme for your show?

It is really fun and rewarding to get strategic with this – and this is what I work on together with my students in my Podcasting Online Course and Mentorship programme. I love to see how their vision for their shows is really taking shape.

Podcasting really is so much more than just creating an audio file and uploading it.

There is a lot that goes in it and when done right, it can be an incredible way to build a powerful brand around your existing business or your personal brand.

I know it can be really hard and overwhelming to figure all of that out on your own – because I have been there and I wasted so much time trying to teach myself everything from scratch.

If you want more ideas how to implement the 3 steps I addressed in this article then I recommend to take a look at my Start a Podcast with impact – Guide.
