Staggering numbers – the problem is real

The amount of clothing produced globally now exceeds 100 billion garments. 87 % of the material used for clothing production every year ends up in a landfill or is incinerated after its final use. This makes the work of Redress even more important.

“The scale of textile waste across the fashion value chain is staggering…an estimated 92 million tonnes of textile waste is now generated each year.” Christina Dean, Redress Founder

Positive Power of Fashion

Redress Founder Christina Dean and her dedicated team of eco-warriors believe in the Positive Power of Fashion. Running the Redress Design Award for the last 6 years, they have been shining a light of creativity and ingenuity amidst the backdrop of a global environmental crisis.

It takes guts to start something from scratch. Christina’s uber-inspiring founder story in #impact Podcast Episode 16 will blow your mind. Dentist turned Eco-warrior is all about doing crazy things. Read and Listen here

Scaling up..and becoming truly global

You heard it on #impact Podcast first! Hannah Lane, Communications Director at Redress shared with us way back in Episode 29 that they have made it their mission to make the 2018 Redress Design Award Competition truly global. This year, for the very first time, they have been accepting applications from all over the world.

55 countries. 11 finalists. 1 goal.

Contestants from 55 countries sent in their applications and 11 talented contestants joined the circle of Redress Design Award Alumni. All of them are on a mission to cut out waste in the fashion industry.

Waste is not waste until it’s wasted

At this year’s competition, 11 young designers skillfully demonstrated that textile waste can be turned into beautiful fashion pieces. Their collections based entirely from waste. Think umbrellas, sofa fabric and furniture offcut, secondhand clothing industry surplus and vintage kimonos. The craftsmanship impressed all the judges as well as the 1000 strong audience.

And the winner is…

Tess Whitfort won First Prize with her bold, punk-inspired, up-cycled, zero waste collection. We could not help but smile with this gorgeous winner!

Bringing sustainable fashion to the stores

Tess will now join The R Collective, a bold new social impact business, to design a capsule collection for retail. But actually, we think all these brilliant young designers are winners already.

Congratulations!
