Season 4 was all about founders – those changemakers full of so much passion that they launched their own NGO or impact business to bring about the change they want to see. This takes an extra helping of grit, resilience and maybe just a little crazy.

Co-host Amanda Williams sits down with Regina Larko to talk about her own #impact founder journey, the highlights – as well as the setbacks – of Season 4, and what’s next for #impact.

Season 4 – So many courageous founder stories!

Being a guest on #impact podcast gets you into an elite club, and Regina worked even harder this season to bring the guests together. With their own WhatsApp group, they were able to reach out for support, explore collaboration and help spread the word about their activities.

The importance of peer support came up a lot in our discussion. Starting something is hard and people need cheerleaders and role models to encourage them to take that leap.

Peers – people who have been there, done that – often make the best cheerleaders. Regina found a kindred spirit in Angie Lau, the ex-Bloomberg broadcaster who now helps people tell their stories with authenticity. Regina now listens back to that episode when she needs an inspirational boost.

Season 4 – Getting even more voices heard!

“Take a moment to say I’m doing good!”

For some of the guests, it had been three years since their first episode. Checking back in gave them an opportunity to reflect on their progress. Jeff Rotmeyer of ImpactHK was still a teacher leading kindness walks in his spare time, and now he’s running a busy day centre for homeless people in Hong Kong. Regina was happy to remind each them of how far they had all come, something that is hard to recognise when you’re busy running an organisation.

“It is never going to be 100% perfect”

One of the biggest lessons that guests shared was to embrace the “just do it” mentality. Regina herself launched before she felt completely ready, with the encouragement of some of her early guests and her own cheerleader,  Célia, who was launching a business of her own. Regina advises everyone to just embrace that fear and go for it.

#impact podcast is growing

In addition to the founder focus, Season 4 saw the launch of the #impact club, the first charity partner with their own bonus episodes, and the opportunity for listeners to share their own impact stories. While doing all this, Regina also found time to create a Podcasting Course – her proudest accomplishment of 2019.

“How do I balance that?”

After having helped her co-hosts, KELY Support Group and Sonalie Figueiras produce their own podcast episodes, she realised that her cheerleading was just as important as her technical instructions. Regina designed her Podcasting course with a blend of encouragement, empowerment and the necessary operational know-how.

Season 4 was a wonderful trip down memory lane celebrating the incredible progress by these social entrepreneurs. Now, it’s time to turn our attention to Season 5 to explore the Sustainable Development Goals and the organisations working around the world to deliver them.
