Dr Austin Gallagher

The first story features Dr Austin Gallagher, Founder and CEO of Beneath the Waves, a Non-Profit organisation based in the United States. Beneath the Waves is dedicated to advancing the conservation of sharks and the habitats they occupy through cutting edge scientific research.

They are devoted to increasing our understanding of sharks and creating evidence to inform their conservation. Working with some of the world’s leading marine biologists, Beneath the Waves executes timely and applied scientific research on sharks and the marine communities they occupy – from coral reefs to open ocean zones – using innovative tools and technologies.

Hillian Siu

The second feature highlights the work of Hillian Siu, a passionate Kitesurfer and documentary producer, who is raising awareness for the plastic pollution in our oceans with her adventurous Kitesurfing HK to Macao Fundraiser. Since she started kiting in Asia she became aware of the garbage problem around the beach and the coastal shoreline.

It is so severe and so ubiquitous that the garbages piling up in one corner of the beach almost feels like a blind spot sometimes.

Hillian shares her #impactstory

After she learned more about The Ocean Cleanup, she felt inspired by all the young people making an impact and decided to take action too. With a bunch of kitesurfers, she will kitesurf from Hong Kong to Macau to raise funds for local charitable organisation A Plastic Ocean Foundation with the raised funds encouraging some bold and passionate social entrepreneurs to fulfil their dreams and improve the condition of our oceans.

Esther Röling

The third voice in this episode, is a very familiar to our loyal #impact listeners. We sat down with Esther Röling around two years ago to in Episode 32 to hear all about her impactful coasteering adventure circumnavigating the entire Hong Kong island, collecting water samples to track the water quality along Hong Kongs shoreline.

She tirelessly continues her efforts to make a positive impact as the founder of Adventure Clean up Challenge Hong Kong. The Adventure Clean up is the first multi-discipline sports competition with a mission for good – help clean some of the harder to access coastal areas in Hong Kong Island.

They raise awareness in relation to waste and coastal contamination and the personal actions we can take to reduce and minimise this in the future, doing so in a compelling, fun and adventurous way.

Benita Chick

We love Benita Chick’s passion for driving change with social entrepreneurship. To celebrate the World Oceans Day, her social enterprise Encompass HK organized an excursion to the Hoi Ha marine park in Hong Kong. The threats to marine parks are very real, as the participants of the excursion experienced first hand.

Ocean and Marine Life Conservation is a huge passion of the trained marine biologist and scuba diving instructor, but this is just one of the many areas in which Benita is dedicated to drive change in Hong Kong. With Encompass HK she offers training and consulting in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and diversity and inclusion, to help alleviate inequality problems in Hong Kong and Asia.
